Born and raised in Toronto and daughter of immigrant refugees, Christine Nguyen is forging her own path into the entertainment industry and is currently building an impressive body of work including roles in CBS’ Star Trek: Discovery and NBC’s Nurses. Below we discuss her role in Amazon Prime’s The Bold Type– read on to find out more.

Hi Christine, thank you for joining us at Defective Geeks! Tell us about your character, Addison, and the role she plays in the series, The Bold Type.

Addison is someone who’s seeking the platform and mentorship necessary to amplify her voice. I think Jane and Addison share an interesting dynamic. At first Addison is a bit unsure of the fit but once Jane gains her trust she’s ALL in. Definitely challenging Jane in what it means to mentor when there is an obvious disconnect.

What has it been like being a part of The Bold Type? What is your personal favorite part about the show and what makes it stand out for you?

It was an absolute delight. What I appreciated the most is the level of camaraderie we had on our set. Filming during a pandemic was tough. We were isolated and our main interactions were with each other. I’m so grateful to have been stuck with the most down to earth, kind and open hearted people. We were like an isolated family and my work wouldn’t be possible without them.

When did you know you wanted to become an actor? Who or what inspired you and continues to inspire you today?

Stories have the ability to shift perspective, change the world and help connect us to one another. How could I not want to be a part of that? My parents are my inspiration. They were refugees from the Vietnam war and they sacrificed their dreams so that I can live mine. So I owe a lot to them. Their stories, their love and their struggles is what inspires me to do this work. There are so many beautiful stories like this out there that have yet to be seen and this is the perfect medium to show it!

What was the hardest part about pursuing a career in acting? What kind of advice would you give to other people who want to start acting themselves?

This life doesn’t owe us much and being able to find what lights you up and makes you curious about the work is crucial. It’s an endurance with no guarantees of a return. So live your life. Fill it to the brim with experiences that move YOU! The rest is just technical.

Do you have any other current or upcoming projects that you can tell us about?

I recently wrapped on a Lifetime movie starring Laura Miyata. Very excited to share it with everyone once it comes out.

Since we are a geek-centric website, we had to talk about it… you play Magic the Gathering! Can you tell us what you love about playing?

OMG–literally everything! The unboxing, building decks and literally annihilating my opponents. It’s a game of strategy but it also challenges your creative thinking. More often than none, thinking outside of the box has gotten me out of many sticky situations. Also the art and themes of the cards are absolutely insane. Recently I was destroyed by someone with a deck made entirely of cats… OF CATS!

If you were to pick one superpower, which one would it be and why? Would you use it for good or evil?

I don’t know what super power this is but if I had the power to, I’d reconnect with my loved ones who have passed.
